Dental Implants

Missing Teeth Can Be Devastating To Your Oral Health If They Are Not Replaced In A Timely Manner!

A tooth, once lost, immediately creates a large imbalance in the mouth that can wreak havoc on your oral health. The tooth root that was once stimulating your jawbone tissue is no longer, and this can cause the jawbone to resorb and dissolve. Maintaining oral health also becomes more difficult which heightens your risk of Gum Disease and tooth decay. The solution is getting dental implants.

What Is The Procedure Like?

Putting in an implant is a surgical procedure, but it can usually be done under local anaesthetic. Your dentist will advise you if you need to go into hospital to have the procedure done under general anaesthetic, though this is unlikely.

Once the anaesthetic is applied, the first step is to make an incision in the gingiva (soft tissue) to show the bone. The dentist will then use a series of drills to create a space for the implant to go. You will not be able to feel the drill going in, but you will notice a feeling of vibration and movement. The implant is then turned into position, and a healing abutment (small extra piece designed to shield the area whilst it’s healing) is placed. The gingiva is then sutured (stitched) around this. The entire procedure takes around an hour for a single implant, and two or three hours for multiple dental implants.
